How did each of the following people feel about the whole situation based on their own individual PERSPECTIVE?
A) Jeanette was not worried about herself when she first entered the hospital. She said that it would be okay if she got better from the burn but also okay if she died. Then after being in the hospital for a little while she liked it a lot because the nurses brought her lunch and gave her bubble gum, which she had never had before. She also said it was a lot more peaceful than her home.
B) The Mother and Father were not to thrilled about her being in the hospital. The mother did not like the fact that they gave her bubble gum because she thought that it was a “low class” habit. And the father was very upset about having her helped by “med school quacks” when they should have obviously taken her to a witch doctor they had taken her sister to in the previous years when she was stung by a scorpion.
C) The nurses were very curious about Jeanette’s life and that getting hurt was abuse. It didn’t come out and say this in the book but it was pretty clear by the questions the nurses were asking her, you could tell where the questions were leading to such as “Have you ever been hurt by your parents? Where did you get all those scars? How did you get burned?”

Reading about how the Walls family did the “skedaddle” a lot, think about the following:
1) The images in my mind when I think about the “skedaddle” are them sleeping in a beat up old car a lot. Not ever being able to find their stuff, and unpacking everything and then repacking everything the next day.
2) The word that would best describe how I would feel is anxious because personally I need to have medication or I would be in the hospital for self-harm. I would probably freak out without my medication and not last very long sane. I wouldn’t know how to get my medication or where to get it from and I wouldn’t really have anyone to talk to about my problems. Except maybe my brother and sisters but that not only would get old but we really don’t usually talk to each other about our problems or they tell me about their problems and I try to solve them because that’s the type of person I am. So I would go crazy after a while. I could barely handle the move here to Colorado.

The walls kids slept in cardboard boxes.
1) The Walls kids thought that sleeping in a cardboard box was fun and an adventure.
2) I think that sleeping in a cardboard box is not fun and personally I would want a real bed and I think it is honestly child abuse.
The walls kids traveling in the back of a moving van.
1) The parents thought it was no big deal. But at the same time they didn’t want anyone finding out that they had the children in the back so they told them to be silent.
2) The cops would have thought it was child abuse and probably would have taken the children away from the parents.
The piano in the yard
1) The mom thought that it would be good for the neighbors to hear and appreciate the music she was making on the piano.
2) The neighbors probably didn’t appreciate it and thought it was annoying, loud, and weird.

The Walls family did the skedaddle from Battle Mountain to Phoenix.
1) Jeanette wouldn’t be Billy Deel’s girlfriend, so Billy told her she would be sorry. He came outside her house with a BB gun and started shooting at Jeanette and her brother and sisters. Then Lori took action and came out with their dad’s gun and started shooting back at Billy. Billy stopped shooting, hid, and started shooting again. So Jeanette grabbed the gun and started shooting at Billy until he disappeared. One of the neighbors ended up calling the police so they moved to Phoenix.
2) In my opinion Phoenix is better because they had money in Phoenix, not a lot, but enough for them to eat lunches at school and get a some what amount of better clothes. And to have their own bikes.

. Analyze Jeannette’s relationship with her dad. Give an example from the book that exemplifies that relationship. Cite page numbers. Compare Jeannette’s relationship and his relationship with his other kids. Was it similar? Why or why not?
Jeanette was the closest one to her father, even closer to her father than her mother was. This really struck me on page # 161 she asked her mom why she always had to get her dad, and her mom said because he likes her the best. Also her dad always called her “mountain goat” but he never gave any of the other kids nickname. He always answered her questions and he said she was the only person who believed in him. And Jeanette after that told herself that she would never give up on her dad. When since the beginning of the book it seemed like Brian, Lori, and the mom didn’t seem to believe in him. The books didn’t say a lot about the relationship between Maureen and her father.

How would you describe Jeannette Walls literary style? Why did she choose this style to get across her purpose for writing book?
I would describe Jeanette Wall’s literary style as a better use of vocabulary and dialogue. In my opinion it did get her purpose for writing the story across because I think that she wrote this book to tell her story and she definitely made her story clear and readable. The use of vocabulary also made it more interesting. The way she wrote the dialogue made the reader really see the way her parents treated her and how people in general treated Jeanette and her brother and sisters.

I think the author’s purpose for writing this book is to tell her story, thinking that no one would accept her especially the people she cared about most and she’s also telling people here’s my story if I can do it so can you. /
